2006 Events
- In July of 2006, Jennifer Sloat and Nick Canganelli, two exemplary students entering their final year of elementary school, were each awarded $1,000 in receipt of the annual Michelle's Wish Scholarship for the 2006-2007 school year. The award was based on their outstanding academic qualifications, the strong recommendations of various members of faculty and their embodiment of attributes important to the Foundation, including 1) a celebration and love of life and family, 2) a possession of beauty - both inside and out, 3) an admirable strength amidst adversity and 4) an effortless care for and positive impact on others.
- In July and August of 2006, much preparation and planning was done for the Michelle's Wish Foundation Wine Tasting & Silent Auction event which took place on September 10, 2006. Through event participation, auction proceeds and wine sales, the event raised over $26,600 which - beginning that evening - helped some very worthy causes! A special expression of thanks goes to all event donors, partners and, in particular, the event planning committee - whose hard work and effort (within a span of merely weeks) created a memorable, first-class event.
- Also in September of 2006, in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a wish was granted to Marques, a courageous young man of 12-years who is suffering from a rare heart condition called Dannon's Disease. Marques loves to take things apart and put them back together and he is particularly fascinated by wireless technology. On September 10, 2006, a check in the amount of $5,000, presented to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, enabled Marques to enjoy a memorable visit to Chicago, tour a wireless communication headquarters and manufacturing facility and learn everything there is to know about wireless technology. Also, Marques received a brand new Razor phone - as a gift - and smiled throughout his recounting of the experience!
- In September of 2006, during the Wine Tasting and Silent Auction event, a check in the amount of $5,000 was presented to University Hospitals of Cleveland (UH), to be used for a medical research program. Uniquely, the program identified by UH for these funds ties well with the Michelle's Wish mission. The program is tailored to the furtherance of education of nurses through off-campus visitations to various UH facilities - a perfect Foundation fit.
- In September of 2006, also at the Wine Tasting and Silent Auction event and through a partnership with Ursuline College, a $2,000 scholarship was granted to Erica Rogers, a bright and promising nursing student in her 2nd year at Ursuline. This grant, awarded through the Michelle's Wish Education and Scholarship Program, serves to recognize and assist outstanding nursing students to carry on Michelle's legacy to help continually improve patient care.
- In October of 2006, an inspired neighbor of Michelle's, Konnor Bachman - through a truly remarkable exhibition of tireless commitment to a great cause - was honored by Kohl's Department Stores with both the regional and national awards from the Kohl's Kids Who Care Program. Konnor's nomination was recognized by Kohl's for his continued effort to raise money for the Foundation through the sale of the Michelle's Wish Memory Bands, featuring the meaningful words "Life - Love - Family - Strength." Through Konnor's work and Kohl's recognition of that work, over $2,500 was raised and will help fulfill the Foundation's mission.
